MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — SEPTEMBER 11, 2026
Morehead City says it now has $1.7 million in state and federal commitments toward a proposed public waterfront nature park on Spooner’s Creek, including a newly awarded $500,000 Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant.
What is proposed
The proposal would conserve roughly 18 acres of waterfront within the Spooner’s Cove development along Bryan Street and provide public access. The $500,000 grant is a significant step toward acquisition, but the final purchase and park boundaries have not been determined.
What still needs to happen
The city says federal permit reviews connected to the development will help determine whether an acquisition is feasible. A survey would establish the park’s specific boundaries if the project proceeds. Its size, design and acquisition remain unsettled.
Morehead City says it will provide official updates as the effort develops. The proposal involves the city and partners including the North Carolina Coastal Federation.
